Skills
What a good MERN stack developer brings
Look for practical decisions across the interface, data and reporting layers. Ask a developer to explain their choices against the way your product is used, using examples from the work you need done.
- Data modellingThey choose when to embed related MongoDB data and when to reference it, then add indexes for common queries.
- Data consistencyThey use Mongoose schemas or MongoDB schema validation to stop inconsistent documents accumulating in the database.
- React interfacesThey handle loading, error and empty states, manage server data with a fetching library and keep screens usable on phones.
- Reports and changesThey use aggregation pipelines for dashboards and transactions where related changes must succeed or fail together.
- Shared checksThey share TypeScript types or validation schemas across the front end and back end so API changes are caught on both sides.
Use cases
What you can hire MERN stack developers for
MERN suits a first version of a software product where you want a JavaScript team working from the database through to the interface. It also fits internal tools and CRMs with forms that vary between customers, or marketplaces with listings, search, reviews and messaging. For chat, notifications or live tracking, developers can use Socket.IO or MongoDB change streams.
Check the data model before settling on the stack. MERN works well when data shapes change often and you want JavaScript or TypeScript across layers. Accounting or stock control with many relationships and strict consistency needs often suits PostgreSQL better. Teams also use combinations such as Next.js in place of plain React, so confirm what your project actually needs.
How hiring works
How hiring works with us
You direct the work. Hiring through a studio usually moves recruitment, payroll, equipment and cover for absence to the studio; direct hiring gives you more control and takes longer to set up.
- 01
Choose capacity
We offer developers full time, part time or for a fixed number of hours a month, so the arrangement can match your backlog.
- 02
Agree priorities
You control a shared backlog, and we review priorities together regularly as the product and its needs change.
- 03
Join your workflow
Developers work in your repository, tickets and stand-ups, with overlap hours agreed up front.
- 04
Start with a real task
Plan an environment setup, a product and codebase walkthrough, and a small task that touches the main parts of the system.
- 05
Keep control of accounts
Grant individual access with the least permissions needed, starting in staging. Keep repositories, cloud accounts and third-party services under your organisation, and confirm intellectual property assignment in the contract.
Time zones
Working hours between Malaysia and India
IST is 2h30m behind Malaysia. Most states work Monday–Friday; Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu generally work Sunday–Thursday. Agree an overlap window for stand-ups and quick questions, and keep it free of other meetings on both sides.
Make the rest of the work clear in writing. Tickets with acceptance criteria, screenshots and links reduce back-and-forth across time zones. Written end-of-day updates on progress, blockers and next steps let you catch up at the start of your own day without waiting for a call.
Rules
Handling customer data for a Malaysia project
If your business transfers customer data outside Malaysia, the product and its operating records need to support your notice and receiver-record obligations. We set up a personal data protection notice that covers the transfer and a record of each receiver, its destination country, the type of data and the purpose.
The agreement with a third party or data processor must also contain clauses governing processing and security. We set up those clauses in the project contract alongside the access arrangements for the work.
Vetting
How to judge a MERN stack developer before you commit
- Ask how they would store orders and products in MongoDB. Look for an explanation of embedding versus referencing based on how the data is read and updated.
- Give a paid task with sign-in, a searchable paginated list, a create form and an Express API with tests. Review the finished code as well as the interface.
- Check server-side validation. The API should validate incoming data instead of trusting everything sent by the React app.
- Ask how they would build a monthly sales report. Listen for MongoDB aggregation pipelines and the indexes needed for the report.
- Review code early in the engagement. Early reviews establish standards and catch misunderstandings while they are cheaper to fix.
Checklist
What to have ready before developers start
A little preparation gives the developer useful work to start with.
- Rank your backlog or prepare an initial set of well-described tasks.
- Share your working hours, the overlap you need and who will answer questions.
- Agree what done means, including review rules, expected tests, deployment and approval.
- Document the architecture, coding standards, branching and release process, and how to run the project locally. Record any gaps found during onboarding.
Cost & time
What affects the cost of hiring MERN stack developers
The shape of your work affects the capacity and skills needed.
Commitment
Full-time, part-time and set-hours arrangements have different commitments, as does the notice needed to change them.
Specialist skills
Decide whether the work needs front-end, back-end, mobile or framework-specific experience before choosing the developer.
Codebase condition
Niche frameworks, legacy systems and missing documentation narrow the available pool and slow onboarding.
Changing capacity
We scale the plan up or down as your needs change, so you can adjust capacity when the backlog changes.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Malaysia
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a MERN stack developer?
There is no fixed price. Seniority and the working-hours overlap you need are major drivers: experienced developers cost more and generally need less supervision, while junior developers suit well-defined tasks with close review. A larger overlap also shapes who is available and how the plan is set up.
How can I hire dedicated remote developers?
Start by agreeing the work and how the developer will join your existing workflow. Our developers already work on our client projects; they are not freelancers found for you. We can fit into your existing developers’ repositories, tools and review process, so your team can continue using its established way of working.
Should I choose full-time or part-time help?
Choose full time for a full, ongoing backlog on one product. Part-time or hour-based work suits maintenance, a side project or tasks that arrive in bursts. We let you scale the plan up or down, or pause it, as your needs change.
What is included in the development plan?
The plan includes design support, regular demos and code quality work. We can work on new pages, interface updates and design systems, while reviews, tests and documentation help keep the code maintainable. You get progress updates and direct access to the people doing the work.
Who owns the code and project assets?
You own your domain, content and code, with no lock-in. We provide an NDA and hand code ownership to you. Confirm the ownership arrangements in your agreement before work starts, so your team knows what it will retain and can continue using the project assets.
Can you support the product after launch?
Yes. Ongoing development covers features, fixes and improvements across your website and apps. We communicate through Slack, WhatsApp or email, with regular calls, and you work directly with the developers doing the work. You can use those conversations to discuss the next changes your product needs.
