Skills
What a good AI/ML developer brings
Start with the problem and a measure of success. A developer should be able to explain how the feature will be tested against real examples before choosing a model or writing the integration.
- Model choiceDecide whether a large language model API, a model trained on your data or a set of ordinary rules fits the task.
- Document retrievalSplit documents, create embeddings, store them in a vector database and pass relevant passages to the model with citations.
- Data preparationClean and label examples, separate training and test sets, and check for bias and leakage between them.
- Failure handlingPlan for timeouts, prompt injection and made-up answers, with fallbacks and human review where mistakes are costly.
- Data privacyCheck what goes to model providers, what is stored and who can read logs; assess whether self-hosting is the safer choice.
Use cases
What you can hire AI/ML developers for
An assistant can answer questions using your company documents, help-desk articles or product data. Classification and prediction work covers tasks such as routing support tickets, forecasting demand or flagging potential fraud. Each needs examples that reflect the decisions you want the system to make.
AI fits repeated decisions or documents where an occasional mistake is acceptable or a person can catch it. For tax calculations and access rules, ordinary code and rules are usually safer because the answer must be exactly right every time. If you lack relevant data or a clear success measure, start with a small proof of concept before committing to a full build.
How hiring works
How hiring works with us
You direct the work and agree the priorities with us. We include a lead who reviews code and keeps the work on track, so the developer has a clear review route as the product changes.
- 01
Scope
Agree the work to be done and the capacity it needs. We let you scale the plan up or down, or pause it as your needs change.
- 02
Integrate
Developers work in your repository, tickets and stand-ups. We agree the hours of overlap up front so questions have a clear place to go.
- 03
Set access
We start with individual accounts and the least permissions needed, using staging first and adding production access once the review process is in place.
- 04
Review
Review code early. This establishes your standards and catches misunderstandings while they are still cheap to fix.
Time zones
Working hours between the Netherlands and India
IST is 4h30m ahead of the Netherlands, or 3h30m ahead during Central European Summer Time, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. Agree an overlap window for stand-ups and quick questions, and keep it free of other meetings on both sides.
We use Slack, WhatsApp or email alongside regular calls, and you speak directly to the developers doing the work. Written end-of-day updates cover progress, blockers and next steps. Handover notes record unfinished work, open questions and decisions when both sides are rarely online together.
Rules
Handling personal data in your Netherlands project
If your AI feature uses personal data, decide what the remote developers need to see. India does not have an EU adequacy decision, so a transfer there needs an appropriate safeguard where applicable. We agree the transfer arrangements, including standard contractual clauses where appropriate, and assess safeguards such as encryption or pseudonymisation for the data involved.
Where your business is the controller and we process personal data for you, we set up a written processing agreement covering instructions, confidentiality, security and sub-processors. Those terms shape the access and handling arrangements for the build.
Vetting
How to judge an AI/ML developer before you commit
- Ask how they will decide the feature is ready to launch. Look for a test set, a metric and a pass mark agreed with you.
- Commission a small paid prototype using a sample of your data. Ask for a short report on accuracy, failure cases and potential improvements.
- Ask how customer data is protected when an external model API is used. Discuss data minimisation, provider settings, access control and logging.
- Question a promised accuracy figure made before anyone has seen your data. The result depends on data quality and the difficulty of the task.
Checklist
What to have ready before developers start
Give the developer enough context to start on real work.
- Rank the backlog or prepare a first set of well-described tasks.
- Share the architecture overview, coding standards, branching and release process, and local setup instructions. Record any gaps found.
- Agree your working hours, the overlap window and who will answer questions.
- Define donestate the review rules, expected tests and how work is deployed and approved.
Cost & time
What affects the cost of hiring AI/ML developers
The work and the support around it shape the cost.
Seniority
Experienced developers cost more and need less supervision; junior developers suit well-defined tasks with close review.
Commitment
Full-time, part-time and set-hours plans differ in capacity, as does the notice needed to change the arrangement.
Specialist skills and codebase
Niche frameworks, legacy systems and missing documentation narrow the pool and slow onboarding.
Management
The arrangement changes when a lead plans work and reviews code instead of your team managing the developer directly.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Netherlands
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire an AI/ML developer?
The cost depends on the scope and the capacity you choose. We offer full-time, part-time and fixed monthly-hours arrangements. The skills and seniority needed also shape the engagement: a legacy system calls for different experience from a new build, and the choice between a hosted model API and training or hosting a model changes the work.
How do I choose a dedicated development arrangement?
Choose the arrangement around your backlog. Full-time capacity suits ongoing work on one product; part-time or hour-based work suits maintenance, a side project or bursts of tasks. A studio usually handles recruitment, payroll, equipment and absence cover while you direct the work. Direct hiring gives you more control and takes longer to set up.
How do I hire remote developers to work with my existing team?
Start by agreeing how the developers will join your existing workflow. We fit into your repositories, tools and review process. Plan an initial environment setup and product walkthrough, followed by a small real task that touches the main parts of the system. Track progress through merged pull requests, demos and shipped features.
What is included in the development arrangement?
You get a shared backlog with priorities you control, reviewed together regularly. We provide progress updates and demos, with direct access to the team. Capacity is flexible as your needs change, so discuss the work waiting in the backlog when deciding how much development support to keep in the plan.
Who owns the code and project accounts?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. We provide an NDA and hand code ownership to you. Keep repositories, cloud accounts and third-party services under your organisation, and confirm the assignment of intellectual property in the contract so ownership is clear throughout the engagement.
Can you support the product after launch?
Yes. Ongoing development covers features, fixes and improvements across your website and apps. We also provide design support for new pages, interface updates and design system work. Reviews, tests and documentation are part of the code-quality work, giving your team a record to use as the product changes.
