Skills
What a good AI/ML developer brings
A useful developer can explain the choices behind a model and show you how the feature will be checked after launch. Look for these practical skills.
- Model selectionChoose between a large language model API, a model trained on your data and straightforward rules, based on the task.
- Document retrievalSplit source documents, create embeddings, store them in a vector database and give the model relevant passages with citations.
- Data preparationClean and label examples, separate training and test sets, and check for bias and leakage between those sets.
- PrivacyDecide what goes to a model provider, what gets stored and who reads the logs; consider self-hosting where it is the safer choice.
- Production monitoringTrack output quality, response time, usage and model drift as real-world data changes.
Use cases
What you can hire AI/ML developers for
Developers can build classification or prediction models for lead scoring, demand forecasting, fraud flags and support ticket routing. Embedding-based search and recommendations help customers find products or articles by meaning as well as keywords.
AI is a fit for repeated decisions or documents where occasional errors are acceptable or a person can catch them. For tax calculations and access rules, where every answer must be exact, ordinary code and rules are usually safer. If you lack relevant data or a clear success measure, start with a small proof of concept before committing to a full build.
How hiring works
How hiring works with us
You work with developers who already contribute to our client projects. We offer full-time, part-time and fixed monthly hours, with design, development and launch handled by the same team.
- 01
Agree the work
Choose the capacity you need and identify the tasks the developer will take on in your product.
- 02
Join your workflow
Developers work in your repository, tickets and stand-ups, with overlap hours agreed up front.
- 03
Set up access
We start with individual accounts and the least permissions needed in staging, then add production access once your review process is in place.
- 04
Start on real work
An initial plan covers environment setup, a product and codebase walkthrough, and a small task touching the main parts of the system.
- 05
Document the system
Share your architecture, coding standards, branching and release process, plus local setup instructions. We write down gaps found during onboarding.
- 06
Protect ownership
We provide an NDA and hand code ownership to you.
Time zones
Working hours between Malaysia and India
IST is 2h30m behind Malaysia. The working week is Monday–Friday in most states and Sunday–Thursday in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu. Agree an overlap window before work starts, including when your team will be available to answer questions.
Keep decisions in writing. Tickets with acceptance criteria, screenshots and links reduce back-and-forth, while end-of-day updates record progress, blockers and next steps. When people are rarely online together, handover notes also capture unfinished work, open questions and decisions already taken.
Rules
Handling personal data in a Malaysia AI project
If personal data is transferred out of Malaysia, the cross-border guidelines require you to inform data subjects and keep records of each receiver, destination country, data type and purpose. We set up the data protection notice and a receiver record for the project. Where a third party processes the data, we also include contract clauses governing that processing and its security.
Vetting
How to judge an AI/ML developer before you commit
- Ask how they would decide the feature is ready to launch. Look for a test set, a metric and a pass mark agreed with you.
- Give them a small paid prototype using a sample of your data. Ask for a short report on accuracy, failure cases and possible improvements.
- Ask about an AI feature that did not work. Listen for an honest account of data problems, unsuitable metrics and ideas they dropped.
- Ask how they would protect customer data sent to an external model API. Check their approach to minimising data, provider settings, access and logging.
Checklist
What to have ready before developers start
A little preparation gives the developer useful work from the start.
- Rank your backlog or describe the first tasks clearly, so the developer knows what to pick up.
- Identify who can answer questions and when they will be available during the agreed overlap.
- Write a definition of done covering review rules, expected tests, deployment and approval.
- Use individual accounts instead of a shared administrator login, so access can be audited and removed.
Cost & time
What affects the cost of hiring AI/ML developers
The plan and the way you manage the work shape the scope of an engagement.
Commitment
Full-time, part-time or set hours change the capacity reserved, as does the notice needed to change it.
Management
Decide if your team will direct the developer or if a lead will plan work and review code.
Backlog
A full, ongoing product backlog suits full-time capacity; maintenance or work in bursts can suit a smaller plan.
Skills
Identify the seniority and technical experience the work needs, including any specific framework or legacy system.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Malaysia
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire an AI/ML developer?
There is no fixed price. Seniority affects the cost: experienced developers generally need less supervision, while junior developers suit well-defined tasks with close review. Specialist skills, legacy systems and missing documentation also affect the work needed to get a developer productive.
How do I hire a dedicated remote developer?
Choose how much of the hiring and management work you want to handle. A studio usually takes on recruitment, payroll, equipment and absence cover while you direct the work. Once work starts, review code early and judge progress through merged pull requests, demos and shipped features.
Can I change the plan if my workload changes?
Yes. You can scale the plan up or down, or pause it as your needs change. Before adding capacity, check that you have work ready: hiring before tasks are prepared can leave a developer waiting or filling time with low-value items.
What is included when I hire developers?
The service includes ongoing features, fixes and improvements across your website and apps. It also includes design support for new pages, interface updates and design systems. You control priorities through a shared backlog that we review together regularly.
Who owns the code and project accounts?
You own your domain, content and code, with no lock-in. Keep the repository, cloud accounts and third-party services under your organisation, and confirm the assignment of intellectual property in the contract. That gives your team control of the assets used to run the product.
Can developers support the product after launch?
Yes. The work can continue with regular progress updates and demos, alongside reviews, tests and documentation to keep the code maintainable. If you have developers already, we fit into their repositories, tools and review process so they can work directly with us.
